wireless link for on/off switch and 3 bit code

Looking at using the TLP434A/RLP434A pair along with HT12E/HT12D binary code/encoder but not sure I really need the binary codeer?

1st app-1 need to turn a switch on/off (distance of 6 ft) but maybe overkill using the TLP434/RLP434

Second app is a 3 bit code (3 switches) and transmit which switch was closed over a distance of 6 ft.

Was even contemplating using a simple FM transmitter but may interfer with car radio (app 1)

thought about DTMF but ?? how.

any suggestions

I see Sparkfun carries the WRL 08945 and the WRL 10533 but easier to send DTMF or use a binary encoder/decoder (HT12D/ HT12E but where to obtain the decoder/encoder?

Would DTMF be better?
