XBee Pro 900 RPSMA questions

Sparkfun sez: "No configuration is necessary for out-of-the-box RF communications. "

I’m looking at getting two of these (XBee Pro 900 RPSMA) for telemetry between two embedded systems. One of the attractive specs is the “Fast 156 Kbps RF data rate”.

First question: what is the approximate sustained end to end data rate I can expect? My understanding is that these operate half duplex and some ack/nack protocol must be taking place.

Second question: if these talk right “out of the box”, do I need to tell them to ignore other modules they may hear? I’m not worried about security per se, just don’t want link data rates eroded by one module thinking it needs to try to establish a link with some other modules it hears.

Me: pretty much total newby with rf data links.

Thanks for any illumination!

“Fast 156 Kbps RF data rate”

This is only on the RF link so the fastest throughput is maybe half that or a little less for reliable operation.

"No configuration is necessary for out-of-the-box RF communications. "

This could happen but I've always seen that at least the destination Address needs to be set in XBee's.

Both of the above quote are from Digi Int and must be from their Marketing/Sales department as I don’t believe they are the whole truth. But isn’t that so of all advertising and “buyer beware” always holds true. So read the data sheets for the real information.

Thanks waltr.

Looking around further on this forum, I see that I need to dig deeper especially at the Digi site to understand what’s going on so I’ll do some more homework.
