2.4" OLED Displays

I would absolutely buy the 2.4" or 2.8" displays if they came without the high-level controller.

Caffeine:
ChiMei have come up with a 4.3in diagonal AMOLED…

http://www.glyn.co.nz/Displays_CMEL.htm

I’ll contact GLYN and see how much they are…

No reply yet, but ChiMei are apparently comingout with a 7.6in AMOLED in Q3 2008 (which is now I guess)

Hi guys,

I did asked a supplier before for CMEL AMOLED 2.4" (C0240QGLA-T).

They quoted me USD18 for 10 pieces. That’s very cheap I guess.

I guess it will be cheaper for few k quantity.

I just got a response to an inquiry I placed with OSD earlier today.

The 2.4" OSD display is $32/ea in quantities of < 1k. At >= 1k pieces, the price only goes down $2.

Their 2.8" display is $38. Again, in quantities of < 1k.

That’s with touchscreen.

EDIT

Oh, and like the display from Vision Opto which was posted earlier, they use the S6E63D6 controller.

mmmh, try emailing those prices to someone at sparkfun, maybe they’ll start selling them :?:

So, we can order single ( or less then 10 units ) samples from OSD?

silic0re: how does that OLED look under direct sunlight? Is it still very usable?

I posted in a different thread about looking for a good daylight-visible transflective LCD/TFT and someone pointed me to this thread. Certainly transflective TFT is the “traditional” technology for this but does OLED have the potential to be used in that type of outdoor application as well?

Personally I haven’t made a portable system just yet, so I haven’t tested the OLED outside in sunlight, but I came across some slides on 4dsystems website a while ago that show a comparison of OLEDs vs TFT’s in a variety of conditions, including sunlight:

http://data.4dsystems.com.au/downloads/ … tation.pdf

(page 9 is the comparison for sunlight viewing)

hope that helps

Cool… if you ever get around to testing it in sunlight, I (and I’m sure others) will love to know how it goes!!

It’s interesting to note they observe say “wide viewing angle” vs. a TFT. Any feedback on that? How good is it, in reality? Certainly a limited viewing angle seemed to be an issue with my limited experience with transflective TFTs (on Pocket PCs). They always seemed so reflective, almost like a mirror in some cases. (At least that’s what my memory is saying).

If these things are very sunlight visible and have a wide viewing angle and I can get 2.8" units with a touchscreen at a reasonable price, I’ll be oh-so-happy…

So many of the last few questions have been asked and answered :frowning: I don’t mean to discourage your project in any way, but Please read this post and the OLED post in the Projects forum. Only a little bit of effort and you will find the answers that you seek!

I’m sorry to be seeming redundant, but I had run three different searches with combinations of keywords of “OLED”, “sunlight”, “daylight”, and “outdoor” and wasn’t coming up with much on this forum, and nothing that seemed applicable to my original question.

A Google search combining the previously-mentioned keywords yielded widely varying opinions. Seems like the consensus ranges from “horrible” to “best outdoor display yet.” Since I don’t have an OLED gadget (e.g. cell phone) myself I can’t draw my own conclusions based on experience. And based on that widely varying situation, I suspect it must vary from screen to screen, thus my original question. Searching on the OSD part number on Google doesn’t really yield anything either.

I wasn’t aware of an OLED post in projects. I didn’t know you had moved your discussion on this OLED into the projects forum on a separate, parallel thread. Thanks for the heads-up on that! It’s good to know someone got the part working. I was wondering if you had temporarily abandoned the project since there wasn’t any indication in this thread that you got it working.

General gripe: in general it seems there is no information on whether anything is daylight-visible or not, unless you look for something specifically designed for it, like “transflective LCD.”

So again, I’m sorry my searching skills aren’t quite up to spec. In general I’m quite impressed with what people are doing on this forum, it’s very cool stuff.

Any followup on the price of those 4.3" OLED screens (specifically Caffiene, who seemed to be investigating)? I thought those might make an excellent pair with the PSP touchscreen Sparkfun is already selling. I’m currently dreaming up a Gumstix-based wrist-phone/PDA/PC…

And hey, they’ve just picked up a big OEM order on mobile phone LCD screens - maybe Sparkfun is in a mood for stocking more displays?

silic0re:
almost there!

I only had an hour or so to hack out some quick test code – I think I can successfully write to the registers, because I can ‘turn on’ the display, and take it out of standby, etc., but haven’t been able to successfully draw actual pixel data to the screen just yet. I’m writing to the framebuffer, but for some reason it’s not displaying, and I haven’t had a great deal of time to debug just yet.

Hey Silic0re,

I was wondering if you had an opportunity to develop with this screen further.

Can you share where you located the connector for the screen?

Thanks!

Hi bleepbloop,

I have, and have successfully written pixel data and even some images to it over SPI! A thread with some information, pictures, and code is: viewtopic.php?t=10827 .

The connector that I’ve been using is a Hirose HFQ461CT ( http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea … FQ461CT-ND ).

I hope that helps – it’s great to hear others are interested in developing these beautiful OLED panels!
