303D hot air gun: 110V to 220 V modifcation

Hi all,

I have a 303D hot air gun

https://www.sparkfun.com/products/retired/10706

Since I live in Europe, I cannot plug this equipment to the main electric socket this product input nominal RMS voltage is 110 V, while here in EU the nominal voltage is 220 V.

The equipment mounts a 115 to 9 V (2 output) transformer:

but it also has a connection marked as 220V out, which makes me think that the circuit could work with 220V nominal voltage:

What do you think is the best solution to modify the input power circuit to supply 220 V ?

Thanks,

s.

At a minimum, there’s a 120vac heating element inside that you’d have to change out.

It’s listed as a spare part in the manual:

There might be some other components, too.

I’m all for hacking stuff but this might be a time to steer clear.

A better approach is probably to simply use an external step down converter.

I’d get one with at least a 1000 watts of capacity.

…It’s so odd that the manual lists the weight of the solder station in stones.

Thanks @brow.

Would be helpful to get information directly from Sparkfun staff as well…

Thanks,

It’s not going to be worth the effort to try to adapt a 120 volt station to 240 volts. You’d be better off to purchase a 240 volt model OR you could use a step down transformer like the one in the link below.

One advantage to the transformer is you can use it with other gear as well and can use it to run 240 volt gear at half voltage for testing.
