I’ve made a 3D laser scanner using a Bosch 50m laser distance finder, a raspberry pi, encoders and stepper motors. I’d love any ideas or comments I could get to help improve it!

Nice work! Without any info on your setup, we could only guess on how to help. It seems like you need to slow down the movement for scanning or speed up the scanning pulses to get a better resolution.
Fun! Very nice. The next steps depend on what you want to actually do with the data. duh
For the hardware: I like the bike-chain a lot but why not move the beam with mirrors on two servos?
For software: I’ld say: connect the dots, organize it into planes, and turn the data into some useful information.
