Aerial Depth Finder or Bathymetry

I have a client who is interested in hiring me to take measurements in waste water lagoons. These lagoons range in size from 5-100 acres, and the water is generally around 5 ft deep. What I will be looking for is sludge buildup on the floor of the lagoons, so essentially I need to map the floor of the lagoon. Sonar on watercraft is an option, but there will be a lot of debris in the water, so I’d rather keep it aerial. Would lidar work for this? Or could you recommend another solution?

Hello ozarkdroner!

Lidar probably won’t work since it’s likely the beam will be reflected by the waters surface. We don’t carry anything that would work without putting something on the bottom of the lagoon and if there are derbies in the water, that could possibly get snagged on something.

Sonar is probably your best bet. Maybe something on a float you could lower onto the surface of the water and then get a reading from the surface down to the bottom? Not sure where you would find a sensor for that, but you might be able to hack the sensor found on those fish finders that fishermen put on their boats.

The market is very limited on this unfortunately. Thanks for your response. I will continue to search for a solution
