Arduino and PID = Quadcopter Stable hovering

Im working on a project about quadcopter with arduino as main controller, I am reading for sometime about PID, but it would really help if someone have work or working with PID on similar project would share his idea. Id like to know how to start with and what tools and gadgets required to start. And if he could give his idea also how he started.
