AVR-GSM board fails to program with AVR-ISP500

I bought a Olimex AVR-GSM and a AVR-ISP500 to program it. Docs for AVR-GSM list AVR-ISP500 as compatible.

I installed AVRStudio 4.13 on Windows XP and drivers for AVR-ISP500 fine. Firmware upgrade failed to work for AVR-ISP500. The installer says “the port ‘COM3’ does not exist”. But is does according to list in upgrader and windows.

I can connect with programmer on COM3 or COM4 using AVR Studio but when I try to program I get ‘Entering programming mode… FAILED’.

I did all the suggested things, lowered the Board speeds (STK500 osc and ISP freq).

I can’t get past the ‘Entering programming mode… FAILED’. Seems like the failure to upgrade suggests a faulty programmer…

Should I return the AVR-ISP500 on warranty? Or try another programmer?

Anyone successful with the Olimex AVR-GSM? Or AVR-ISP500 on Windows XP?

P.S. I did install WinAVR as well. But from the WinAVR GUI it also fails to program.

The Olimex PDF documentation http://www.olimex.com/dev/pdf/AVR/AVR-GSM/AVR-GSM.pdf

was wrong. A JTAG programmer is needed, not an ICSP.

AVR-ISP500 will not work.

Get a AVR-JTAG-L or AVR-JTAG-USB.

They are presently updating the docs.
