Battery Powered 2x2 Button Pad

Hi all,

I stumbled across Sparkfun today and was elated to find the 2x2 Button Pad kits.

I’m a total novice and am ultimately interested in creating a battery operated button pad that does nothing but light on/off when a button is pressed. The button pads look like a nearly perfect option, but I’m only seeing the Simon versions of the button pad kits that are powered by a AA battery. Is there a way to rig the standard 2x2 Button Pad to work in a similar fashion (or modify the Simon kit to work without the game portion?)
