The setup figure showing how you connected the Big Easy Driver to an Arduino shows the RESET and SLEEP inputs are left floating, but the pin definition says they should be connected HIGH to operate. Is this an error or can these two connections be left floating?

The schematic diagram shows that these pins (and other control pins) are not floating. They are pulled up or down on the PCB by 20K resistors, for default states of ENABLED, WAKE.
