BlueSMiRF problems

Hi, I’ve been trying to send my BlueSMiRF commands through HyperTerminal with no luck. THe module and dongle shipped with XTNDConnect Blue Manager so the datasheet on the website hasn’t helped much for the setup. It says that I have a connected device and all that so I’m pretty sure there isn’t anything wrong on that side of things. When I open HyperTerminal and try to connect to COM3 (apparently thats the port that XTNDConnect uses for serial) XTND promts and says that a program is trying to access COM3 and asks what device I wish to attach to that port. I chose the BlueRadios device and then… nothing. HyperTerminal just sits there and I can’t type anything. For those of you who are wondering, I’m using 9600/8/None/1/Hardware for HyperTerminal. I’ve tried baud rates from 9600 to 115K.

Each time we get a batch of Bluetooth USB dongles, the software changes. Sorry for the out of date datasheets.

Ditch the software for the time being - the stock XP bluetooth support should work just fine.

Are you able to open the comm port? Are you able to get into the +++ command mode?

I am able to establish a connection on a COM port but I couldn’t enter into config because I really can’t type anything into HyperTerminal. Also, I tried just XP SP2 and although the device is detected and is set up on a COM port, I have an even stranger result. I open up HyperTerminal on the right port but it won’t let me configure the connection. I hope you can shed some light on this issue.

Hyperterm wont allow you to configure an open port, so you would have to use the “Disconnect” button to free up the open port and then goto File>>Properties, the configure button should not be greyed now.

Unfortunately that’s not what I mean. After I disconnect, the configure button is clickable but it doesn’t do anything. No dialog box, no options, nothing. Bu that behavior is only a result of using the XP SP2 stack. I tried on other versions of windows, and it still doesn’t work. So (using the provided software - XTNDConnect) I always seem to get the same response. The device is in range, and connected to a COM port, but when I connect using HyperTerminal I can type but nothing happens. This is becoming quite bothersome.

Ah, sorry, I have misunderstood your issue. I hope someone from Sparkfun might be able to aid you with this.

Cheers

hyperterminal bites it. IMHO. I use teraterm, a bit low featured but doesn’t have all the hyperterm quirks. worth twice the price…

Same result with a different terminal app.

I finally got it working (a couple weeks ago). One day I fired everything up and magically, it worked. I do, however, have another problem now. I wrote a program to send a receive characters from my PC through BlueSMiRF to a robot controller. I can send from the controller to the PC and it reads fine. The problem I have is that I can’t seem to get the robot to pickup the characters i send from the PC. There is an actual RS-232 port on the robot controller in adition to the TTL pins. I used this to display output of what it was receiving. Everytime I connect to it from my PC it shows ascii characters 13 and 10 (carriage return and new line). It doesn’t however pick up the character I’m trying to send to it. If anyone has run into this problem or has any solution you input would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, the problem you described first is the exact problem I’m currently having right now.

I do the proper Windows XP connection and it sets up on COM3 “COM0” serial interface to my DIP module. I threw a LED on PIO[2] which shows connection status, and when I fireup HyperTerminal and hit connect to COM3, the LED lights I mentioned previously, lights up! Perfect, I know I’m connected wirelessly to it, but typing anything into the console yields nothing! And yes, scroll lock is off! :frowning:

Can you quickly run over your settings again for me? That would be great!

EDIT:

AH! Nevermind!

I found the solution!

Just tie the TX and RX pins together.
