I just got a couple Bluetooth serial modules off eBay (link:http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Serial-4-pi … 3f17d98938) After managing to fry one of them (they really need reverse voltage protection) I was wirelessly communicating over Bluetooth to my Linux box without any problems. The modules use RFComm and provide a serial device under /dev that can be used just like a regular serial port. I think Sparkfun should carry these or similar modules, they’re a cheap and easy way to add Bluetooth to a project.
Those modules look skeptical and short range. Not customizable enough for some people. Usually when people need a reliable link people get an xbee or something. The only reason I would want bluetooth for a project is to connect to a PC.
That’s exactly what I’m doing – connecting my Pololu 3pi to my computer. I’m just suggesting this as an idea, Sparkfun would probably want to design a new board with better range and higher quality.
