Can a Sparkfun Wifi Shield work with 2011-vintage Arduino Uno R2?

I am new to the Wifi Shield. Trying to use it with an old Arduino Uno R2. It lights up but Wifi Shield sample programs do not work – call to esp8266.begin() is not true, “Error talking to ESP8266.”, etc.

Is Wifi Shield supposed to work with an Uno R2?

I also have a redboard (other project at the moment) so could try that too.

It should but I don’t have an old Uno to test with.

Make sure the switch on the shield is set to “SW”, that’s the only thing I think could be a problem.
