Connect One serial to wifi bridge

Hi everyone,

I just thought I would toss out this module information. For general usage in low data exchange applications:

IW-SM2128M1

and may use:

iW-ANT2-BL for the antenna

I have been playing with this module for a few weeks and am fairly happy with it’s performance thus far. With all the call for wireless hardware applications these modules might fit the bill if your demands aren’t to high.

These come in handy if you have an existing wifi infrastructure in that there is no reason to purchase both Xmit and Rcv radio modules, and then implement them both.

The modules don’t seem to draw and exorbinant amount of current @ 3.3vdc (~250ma in xmit mode).

You will also likely need to order a MAX3232 or similar for the serial interface. All in all ~$70… about the same as an XBee xmtr/rcvr pair.

HTH with your project ideas.

ps. - I have zero affiliation. I just ran across these one day while looking for a wifi solution for my PIC projects.

I posted the same thing a couple months ago…

Adding it on here so folks can see that its now 2 people saying that they are dam good modules!

ConnectOne is great if you want the smarts it has. It is an overkill if all you want is WiFi to serial data. For the latter, a new/cheap option is a WiFi bridge module from WizNet.

The WiFi versions of the mature Lantronix Xport and Xport Direct are the best choices for dumb serial port bridging. WizNet makes some low cost ones too, OEM modules. Sold by Saelig and others.

Thanks for the replys.

matkey… yep, found your post shortly after sending this info out (DOH!). I’m glad to see you are happy with this module. I am still searching for something slightly cheaper to prototype with but I believe it will come in time. In the mean time, this module fits current my needs.

stevech… I have looked briefly at the WizNet unit available @ Saelig. The only module I see available does not reflect a “cheaper” alternative. Since many people are interested in lowering costs, could you shed some light on where one might find these type of devices for considerably less $$? TIA.

WizNet has a new $45 or so WiFi module that’s interesting. I’ve used their ethernet modules and they’re great if you are an expert at such and not a novice ( I am not).

Their WiFi module is just beginning to ship it says on their website, in Jan/09.

WizNet is in Korea and they don’t spend much on English translations! Not good for novices.

The Lantronix WiPort Direct is mature and easy to use.

ConnectOne is great and a good price and you can just ignore all the functionality you don’t need. Well documented.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, Stevech. I will have to take a better look at the WizNet module. If it not excessively cumbersome, the savings would be welcomed.

My impression thus far with the Connect One unit is along the same lines as Matkey’s beliefs, it appears “they are dam good modules”.

ConnectOne and WizNet’s WiFi module are apples vs. oranges.

Regarding price, we looked into using these for a work project. We were talking for a run of about 1000 units, and the price of the chips on the module (Connect One device and Wi2Wi device) was about $37 dollars. Cant comment on the Wiz modules as we didnt want a simple WiFi UART. We were sending custom TCPIP commands over it.
