Digital 16bit Serial Output Type Ambient Light Sensor IC - BH1715FVC or BH1721FVC
These sensor look amazing and I have been looking for a long time for a digital light sensor but they are usually tiny such as this one. However it is one of the few on the market and I would love to see sparkfun produce a breakout board to make it possible to use for small projects. I have recently bought the SCP1000 and SHT15 to build a weather station using a pic and would find it very cool to add a light sensor to it as well.
Below is the link to the data sheet from rohm semiconductor, I hope others like this idea.

Thanks for the link; looks like a nice sensor. I designed a project that used the same air pressure and humidity sensors, but used a tiny solar cell as the light sensor instead. The idea with the light sensor was to estimate the potential for solar power generation at a particular site, and a good way of doing this is to measure the short-circuit current on a small solar cell. I like your sensor better though…
You could always design a simple breakout board and have it made with BarchPCB - should only cost a few dollars.
Thanks I have not heard of that company before I will take a look.
Oops, should have been “BatchPCB”, ie the SparkFun company. You can even make your PCB available for sale to others if you wish: http://batchpcb.com/index.php/Products
