do I have a short in my avrpg-2 cable/plug??

short in new AVRPG-2 programmer??

new to this, bought Beginning Embedded Electronics - Microcontroller Kit and I get “no response from controller” error when I try to download the hex into the chip. Testing for correct voltages I found that the voltage at the reset button was 5V with the programmer disconnected and 0.5V when the programmer was connected to the board (but disconnected from my computer’s parallel port). when I disconnected the ground at position 4 on the connector this behaviour stopped and the voltage was again 5 volts. I assume that this means there is a short in my programmer (also there is a continuity between two of the pins on the db25 end of the programmer when it is disconnected from everything–I assume this is wrong too.

If my surmise is correct I will wait for a new programmer (already ordered). If this is normal behaviour I will go back searching the board for another error

thanks for any help

Jeff

My programmer, an avrisp mk ii from atmel, does the same thing. Ie, it holds reset low when not connected to the computer. It works fine, so I assume that’s the normal behavior.
