Does Sparkfun’s “GM862 Cellular Quad Band Module - CEL-00757” support Python or not. The Sparkfun module does not have the -PY suffix. So if Telit is correct, it should not support Python.
I just got an e-mail from Telit support saying that “your module is a simple QUAD module without Python interpreter. To use pyhton you have to purchase a GM862QUAD-PY with Python inside.”
But I also got an e-mail from Sparkfun support that says that it does support Python. “Yes, both of our GM862s support python, the Telit python software is linked on our product pages.”
So which is it?
The software linked appears to be an IDE for Windows only. I’m running on the Mac, and not sure why I need to install an IDE to upload and run Python on the module.
I forwarded the Telit response to Sparkfun’s support and it appears that they made a mistake: “Very sorry about that. The CEL-00757 modules we are currently stocking do not support Python. The CEL-07917 does however.”
So the basic GM862 (without GPS) module on Sparkfun does NOT support Python.
I am an apps engineer that specializes in Telit, and I have run into this issue many times as well. The confusion arises from the fact that all of Telit’s new products come with Python, so they abandoned the PY suffix on their new modules.
I would caution relying on Python too heavily though, as it was not meant to handle very involved scripts.
