Enclosure buttons to contact push buttons

I am working on an electronics project and have found a lot of useful information on these forums, so I figured I would post here to see if someone could help me with my question.

I am working on a project where my PCB will have 3 tact switches (Omron B3S-1000). I am looking for a place to purchase the plastic buttons that usually extend through the enclosure and contact these types of push button switches. I see these in several devices I have taken apart, but haven’t found where they can be purchased. Does anyone know where these can be purchased?

I have found other Omron switches that are designed for keycaps, but I would prefer to just find plastic buttons to contact the flatter Omron switches.

I’d greatly appreciate any information you can offer.

P.S. Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this type of question, but it seemed to be the best fit.

Thanks,

-Jon

You can buy switches with long actuators of various lengths.

If you want to use the switches you have, perhaps using a short acrylic rod as an extension would work. A grommet (or something similar) over the rod would keep it from falling out if you turn the device upside down.

An O-ring of the right size would be perfect for keeping the rods in the case. You might want use a trashed soldering iron tip to melt a divot in the end of the rod.

Thanks for the tips, I will probably use some of these ideas for my prototype or purchase the more expensive switches with the long plungers that I could get keycaps for.

I ran into this with an older project and was looking for a high-tech way to fix it. Ended up going with a low-tech fix. We took three of the button caps and superglued them on top of each other. That gave us enough height to make it through the front panel.

jonkuhn,

I’ve also been in this situation before. Your best bet is to get a push button with an extended plunger. I’ve tried super glue and although it works for some buttons, others with slick surfaces can cause problems.

Hope this helps!

Nice.

Where did you get the enclosure? it doesn’t look cheap. Is it plastic? How did you manage to cut the holes for those switches?
