FTDI Basic and Atmega328P fatal error

I recently bought a FTDI Basic to use with my atmega328P ICs. It works good for programming the ICs but if I attempt to use The Burn bootloader w/ Arduino as ISP I encounter a very bad error. When i attemted to burn the bootloader on Com3 (the FTDI Basic board) shows up as uninstalled on Device manager. At this point if i Restart my computer All my com ports wont work at all, as in I cant use any USB port, like my keyboard and mouse. I had to reinstall windows because of this. Im too afraid to try it again. If anyone knows why this happend let me know. Also Im running Windows 7 64bit.

If you are using the Arduino Uno. Make sure that the drivers you are using are NOT the FTDI drivers. Arduino Unos are now using Atmel chips so you will have to use the Arduino Uno R3 driver.
