GeoFence software

Is the GeoFence software still supported? It doesn’t appear that the Google Maps API is working. I’m running it on Windows 10 64-bit. The Boulder map shows up for a second and disappears with an error "Oops! Something went wrong. \n This page didn’t load Google Maps correctly. See JavaScript console for technical details. "

I am connected to the internet.

Thanks in advance,

Chuck

Hi Chuck.

I’m not 100% sure about this error, but previously accessing the google maps API was free and about a year ago, google started charging for access, breaking the GeoFence software. I did mention this to the team that wrote the software and they are investigating a way to get around this.

The fix will likely be that you would need to [sign up with google to get a API key and then enter the key in the to be revised GeoFence software, or we may be able to find a different set of maps that can be used.

The good news it it looks (at least from [this article) like you might be able to still use the API key for free as long as you don’t make more than 28,000 page loads per month and I don’t imagine you’d need that many with the software.

Keep an eye on the [tutorial for a new version of the software. I’m not sure how long it will take to get it updated, but the software team here is aware of the issue and we hope to find a solution soon.](https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/getting-started-with-the-geofence/all#software-overview)](Insane, shocking, outrageous: Developers react to changes in Google Maps API - Geoawesome)](Maps Static API Usage and Billing  |  Google for Developers)

Thanks. I was able to work through that problem after getting the source. Substituted the API key and the mapping works now. On to the next bump - the serial port.

My device in on COM 1 as per the Device Manager; however, Geofence does not detect it. COM 1 through 4 disappear from the dropdown list when I click the Find Serial Ports button. Open does nothing and if I send configuration I get a no open ports message.

12 hrs later.

Now I’ve been through God knows how many installs and rebuilds of serialport and electron but I can’t get the two to play nicely.

Any suggestions?

I’m not sure why it’s not working, but at the moment we don’t have any suggestions other than to wait for the GeoFence software to be updated by our team.

They have been notified and will get to it as soon as possible.

Okay, Thanks. May I suggest a custom config file to drop in a Google API key.

I’ll pass that on!
