GPS MiniMod

Hi,

I just received a GPS MiniMod (GPS-08416) from sparkfun. It has only three pins: Ground, VCC and TX. I supply power (+5 volts and ground) and connect the TX-line to an oscilloscope, just to see if there is any action at all on the TX pin, but the TX pin is dead  ! (Actually, it has a constant voltage of 2,5 volts.) I expected this module to produce the GPS information continously on the TX pin.

Please, give me a clue. What am I doing wrong? As far as I can see, there is not much else to do since there are only one I/O-pin (TX).

attach it to a battery (3.6v -6V), put it in a box and leave it outside for about an hour. possibly on a non-conductive table like wood. see if there is any activity on the LED. is try looking at the tx pin. I have heard a lot of problems with the mini-mod boards.

another thing is to see if there is data on the TX pin of the GPS chip, i.e pin 8 per datasheet. this will be at 1.8V

Hi,

thank you for your suggestion. That did actually help  ! I guess the problem was that there was not a very good signal reception in my office room. Once I moved to another room, the Mini-Module responded immediately. It is now producing NMEA-coded GPS-information, just as I expected. Thanks again for your help.
