Unless that module is somehow faulty, you will most likely be disappointed with any replacement you try. The location accuracy for standalone modules is limited by the GPS system, not by the individual modules.
What results are you getting with that NEO-7N and what do you consider to be a problem?
That module has +/- 2 meter accuracy already, how much more accurate does a bait boat need?
I pick up about 10 satellites and it seams to be about 5 meters away from it saved point.
That error will vary with time, the number of satellites and their position in the sky. 5m error at a single point in time is not unusual or surprising with any modern GPS unit. The NEO-7N is working as expected.
The distribution of errors for location data accumulated over a very long period of time is roughly bell-shaped (Gaussian), and the stated typical error of +/- 2m is the standard deviation of that collection of points.
Its more like +/-5m at the moment
Will increasing the number of satellites acquired bring the accuracy down any?
I found its consistently about 5m away form the saved point at the moment. Im new to this but i would imagine the inaccuracy would vary.
If you are new at this, take a bunch of readings over a couple of hours and plot them. And do some reading, for example, take a look at this thread.
This is an example of what you are going to see. Notice that positional errors change slowly with time.
Thank for the replies, my friend has the exact same boat and achieves constantly better accuracy than mine. Thats why i was questioning the functionality of the module.
Welcome to the complex world of GPS positioning, and enjoy the adventure ahead.
I don’t know that your are going to find a drop in replacement here, if you can figure out how to wire it up a zed-f9p breakout pairded with an appropriate antenna shoud give you sub meter accuracy.
Best Quote of the week !
Yea, assuming it’s like a bait car, you get the bad guys to steal it, remotely cut the engine over deep, jellyfish-filled waters and film the results for justice laughs.
This could actually be a great show. After a few minutes of hidden panic cam, remotely command some leaks and strobe a cartoonish ‘Shark Detector’ alarm on the helm. A few more minutes of reel and cue the Flex Tape guy (looks Phil Swift!) and a couple cops to motor over in half a boat to apprehend the crooks.
And that my friends…gets my vote for the best Post of the Week.
