Help buying components for infared to MIDI over USB

Hi everyone

I need help selecting parts to build a reactive sound sculpture. I have messed about with Bare Conductive touch boards but have never built a project completely from scratch and am a bit lost on what components I need to buy. I’m a beginner so please forgive any Technical vocabulary goofs.

I would like the project to have two types of user controls that send MIDI over USB

1- arcade buttons for triggering audio samples

2- infared proximity sensors that will adjust effects and sound parameters such as pitch.

Can both of these functions be handled by one Arduino board?

If I need multiple circuit boards can they all be combined to send signal into one IPad?

The people interacting with this piece will be standing right next to it Pushing the buttons. So the infared proximity sensors do not need to cover a large distance. It would be better if they where focused and accurate. Ideally there would be about 5 buttons and 3-5 infared sensors.

I’m looking for a shopping list of parts to buy that will work well with each other. I know I will have to problem solve a gazillion little things about this project. I would really appreciate at least starting out with components that will are compatible with each other. I’m hoping to get this thing built and working for an event that happens in one month.

I really appreciate anyone’s input on this.

Thank you!

I think Arduino Due would be a good choice for this project.
