high bright fluorescent LCD unit

Hi, electronics loving guys,

I’ve stepped across “high bright fluorescent LCD” unit ad. The company WWW site is;

http://www.noritake-elec.com

They are making plug-in replacement LCD products for legacy market as

well as much more attractives. Will any techie have ideas? JP site is;

http://www.noritake-itron.jp

if you can read Japanese. The parent company is the maker of famous bone china.

Toru Nishimura / ALKYL Technology

I want one of them :slight_smile:

They look great, but provide no pricing. That usually means you can’t afford it. :slight_smile: Or they might only want to do high volume customers. I’d love some of the character based units though.

VFDs have been around for a while. It took me about 3 minutes to find multiple places that sell them. The 44780 compatibles and similar are carried by a number of outfits and are usually $60ish. The graphics displays are around $120.

The company’s JP WWW site claims it has invented a version of VFD applied with Carbon Nano Tube technology;

  • ultra high bright

  • power efficient

  • longer life

  • multi colour

All are woo factors…

The 44780 compatibles and similar are carried by a number of outfits and are usually $60ish. The graphics displays are around $120.

It sounds ridiculous. JP WWW site online purchase pages say;
  • 1,995 JPY for 5x7 dot character 16 columns x 2 line (ready to use kit, not a part)

  • 7,700 JPY for 128x32 bitmap (each dot has multi level brightness, a kit)

They would be quite nice candidates to upgrade SparkFun serial-enabled LCD product line.

Here is the sugested circuit diagram;

More are avaiable at their engineering contents rich WWW site.

Sorry about serial posting; there are many many product listed there;

  • USB controllable 128x32 bitmap display; 10,290- JPY

  • a variation of the above which fits inside 5" bay; 18,690-

Literally irresistible to click to purchase them …

Just FYI, 1,995 Japanese Yen (JPY) comes out to about $18.52 (USD) according to Google at the current time. Just in case anyone needs a point of reference for those prices.

BTW, If you haven’t seen it, you can put “1,995 Japanese yen in US dollars” into Google and it will tell you “1 995 Japanese yen = 18.52956 U.S. dollars”. Very handy. It also does other unit conversions, like distances, weights, temperatures, etc. For instance “1 furlong per fortnight in mph” gives “1 (furlong per fortnight) = 0.00037202381 mph”.
