I’ve signed up for the Edge Impulse Workshop coming up this week, and the Himax WE-I seems to be getting very hot, in the vicinity of the IC that’s on the opposite side of the board from the “reset” switch. It will work for a while, but then shuts down. If I unplug it and let it cool a couple of minutes, it will work for a little while.
FWIW, I plug it into a Raspberry Pi 4 that has an “official” touch screen. (I was having some trouble getting everything to “sing together” on the MacBook Pro, likely because I’m running High Sierra, and had the RPi handy.)
Thanks for reaching out to us on this.
That could be for a variety of reasons, please refer to the datasheet to ensure your are operating within voltage limits… https://cdn.sparkfun.com/assets/1/b/b/2 … nt_v03.pdf
It might be because of the code being used having too high of a polling frequency, a wiring error, etc…it also might be a good idea to install a cheap heatsink on the chip (~$1-2) to aid cooling
Hope this helps, and happy sparking!
TS-Russell,
I purchased a “built board”. The manufacturer (Himax) along with the folks Edge Impulse has provided examples to get the thing up and running, so I’d expect that they’d keep it within “normal” parameters, and I certainly would not expect to have to read a data sheet to complete it unless said examples said to. Indeed, completing this is a “required pre-requisite” for the [Edge-Himax-SparkFun Workshop. And I’d be very surprised that if a heat sink were required to operate the kit, SparkFun would not include one.
FWIW, I did check the voltage at the USB connector that I’ve been using, and got 5.0V. (Current bounces around from about 160mA to about 200mA, but that is likely an artifact of the sampling of the USB tester I was using.)
With well over 50 years of “doing” electronics, I learned long ago that for most electronics, if it’s too hot to touch, something’s wrong. (Obviously vacuum tubes and high power amplifiers are exceptions.)
Basically I’m wondering if I’m the only one who’s having to unplug the Himax board and let it cool down multiple times in doing the exercises.](https://www.sparkfun.com/edge_impulse_himax)
I just plugged in mine for the first time a few minutes ago, and it is pretty warm, as well.
