How to track vibraphone key strikes.

Hi,

I’m trying to track when a key is struck and when it is muted, basically an ADSR envelope. It’s actually for a Balinese Gamelan instrument but a vibraphone is a close Western equivalent (metal key, resonator tubes, and struck with a mallet. The differences being that I am dealing with bronze keys and the mallet is hard with no padding, also when a key is struck the left hand mutes the previously sounding key at the same time).

Ultimately, I would like to have the whole group hooked up and tracked (about 22 people * 5-10 keys/person) displaying the data in a web browser in real-time, but getting one instrument working would be great for now.

I’m thinking using a piezo attached to the bottom of the key (perhaps near the resonating node to not impede vibration too much) would be a starting point.

If anyone has advice or comments they would be much appreciated.

Thank You
