Hi people, i’m just wondering i am thinking about buying quite a few Xbee 900MHz modules, the ones with upto 15 mile range, and was wondering if there was a way to use these modules as a relay so that whenever they recieve a signal they will retransmit it to extend the range!
Kind of like a a Wi-Fi range extender does?
Any Clues?
Regards
Craig
If you are going to buy quite a few, it behooves you to RTFM, perhaps discuss your plans with the Digi app engr. Relay: short answer: yes.
XBee 900 MHz with a costly, large high gain antenna, and a mating one on the far end, and clear line of sight, might get 5-10 miles. Do the math with a link budget tool (on-line) for whatever antennas you speculate on using.
Thanks, i am looking for nearer to a 50 square mile range mesh network! but i think i found the information i needed last night, but thank you for your input.

Just FYI, those Xbee modules aren’t legal for use in Europe…
I wish i cared about leaglity!!!
Just kidding, i have a frequency converter that i aquired a few years ago, you input the 900mhz signal and it changes it to a 8.2GHz frequency that i have a licence for, unfortunatly it doesn’t have a 2.4GHz input!
But as the input is a direct cable RP-SMA to RP-SMA, it wont transmit anything on the 900MHz band so therefore it is legal to use once it has ben check by the licensing authority.
Shame they didn’t make Xbee’s for the 10GHz band because i have a licence for that aswell!

the No. American 902-928MHz band is unlicensed but not so in ETSI/EU.
There is a bit of similar spectrum there at 868MHz.
