Industrial Lasers

Sparkfun it would be cool if you sold class 4 lasers for cutting aplications or just as simply as engraving wood!

So who would want a laser like this? :?:

that would definitely be illegal…

Want? Not me, well i don't need anymore...

Anyway i guess many would like lasers that can do damage to various surfaces but it’s not something i can see Sparkfun carrying.

Much too dangerous for the beginner (which, i’m guessing, make up quite a few of Sparkfun’s sales). You only get one pair of eyes and all that.

It is not illegal, well at least not in my state because people and catologs sell class 3 lasers all the time!

But what if was just a class 2 lazers which are less powerful!

But Class 4 lasers are not Class 3 lasers, anybody can buy/sell a class 3a laser and class 3b aren’t too terrible hard to get a hold of either…class 4 are humongous…And class 2 lasers are less than a laser pointer…that’s essentially nothing…

Your OP was suggesting lasers for cutting/engraving applications, Sparkfun already sell class 3 lasers.

Oh sorry I ment class 4 lasers not class 3. Anyway there is a book called Ellectronic Gadgets for the Evil Genius which has instrustions to build a 20 watt CO2 powered laser! Back to buissnis but what about having just a simple 500mili-watt laser? Which would probablly come out about $200 but it would be worth it and after a couple of Christmasis I would probably get a couple!

I know exactly what book you are talking about, I read it too. I actually own a 300mW class IIIb green laser, it cost about $320 on ebay. A 1/2 watt laser would probably run about 400 to 500 dollars for a red one, and a lot more depending on the color. Red is cheap but also not as powerful. Green appears much brighter at the same power, so it costs a lot more. Also, class 4 lasers are classified as greater than 500mW.

This should explain it all:
