issues with GE863-GPS -- cannot get GPS to respond

I have quite a bit of experience with the GM862-GPS platform, so i took the plunge, and had two GE863-GPS boards made up.

I am able to get on both modules, and everything appears to work fine. I have performed a couple test calls, etc.

However, the GPS on both of them is acting strangely. When I issue these two commands, i get back a blank response:

AT$GPSACP

$GPSACP:

AT$GPSSW

$GPSSW:

Checking the current consumption, however, gives me an expected value:

AT$GPSAI?

$GPSAI: 9

I suspected that perhaps, maybe, telit’s initial firmware load broke. But after uploading firmware twice on one module, and noticing the other module is acting the same, I have confirmed we are doing something wrong.

The GPS power is turned on, the power save is off (full mode activated), and pretty much all the defaults are in place. Usually on a telit module, at least the 862-GPS, plugging in a GPS antenna and leaving it in a default mode gives you a fix right off the bat—or at the very least–no fix data and the current internal time of the GPS receiver.

I do not think there is an issue with the GPS antenna physically or the wiring because a GM862-GPS will at least give you internal time and invalid fix data without an antenna connected.

I am not using a camera, or doing anything unusual.

any ideas?

Have you got NMEA data coming out of the GPS port, and is the LED output pulsing at 1 Hz? My prototype GE-863 system does that, as soon as it is powered up. You need to have an antenna connected, of course.

Thanks for the reply, but after about an hour wondering why this wasnt working and posting this message, i soon realized that I didnt bother to connect the SiRF bin tx/rx lines to the second serial port of the device. :stuck_out_tongue:

After connecting these lines up, everything worked fine.

On the GM862, this is done internally. This little tidbit of information was a 2 liner buried in the middle GE863 software guide, no less!

Anyway, the GE863 is a great module … very tiny! GSM and GPS performance is great.

hi!

I make a project called OBU, and I use the GM863-GPS platform.

I have connect my PC with the DSUB of the S3-Board. Now, I have a problem with the terminal program. I receive something in binary that I don’t know what that means. If somebody can help me to decode the code, I apreciate.

I just want the velocity and geographical coordinates.

Thanks
