LG580P module - questions about gps heading

Very excited about the LG580P module, thank you so much for making this available! For me the big selling point is the gps heading. I was reading the Sparkfun page, and could not find much information.

  • I see there is no datasheet on the sparkfun webpage and not hookup guide - is it just dead links, or should I look for information from another place?
  • In particular, what are the requirements to get good heading? What kind of antenna should be used? If heading ± 1 degrees, 5 degrees, 10 degrees is enough, is it possible to buy different quality of antenna? What kind of separation distance should there be between the antennas? Are you able to recommend antennas and cables that work well with the unit to get the heading information with a good quality?
  • I could not find information about power consumption when running and time to switch between run modes; for example if I need only 1Hz heading update, what is the lowest power consumption I can reach then?

Hi JR (@JRblt ),

Thanks for the heads-up about the dead links. It looks like the docs haven’t been built and published yet. I’ll let folks know. Until they are, you can view the datasheet etc. at the link below.

The quectel_lg580p_series_dual-antenna_heading_application_note has good notes about antenna spacing and heading accuracy.

Best wishes,
Paul

Hi @PaulZC ,

Thank you so much for the links  . Will be great with the links up again on the web-page. I will go through the pdfs for now  . If there can be hookup guides / tests / tutorials in addition on the SF webpage this would be great, this is the best way for us users to really see how things work - always a bit hard to read a datasheet while not being a niche expert on a specific class of components and doing just a bit of electronics now and then

The hookup guide should be posted shortly, it’s a brand-new release so it can take a couple days for the docs to funnel into their places….but it’ll be available at that link ASAP

Thanks for the update and info! No worry no hurry - it is very understandable that it takes a bit of time to release everything  . I will F5 the web page now and then  .

Hey there, sorry about the delay… the hookup guide should be up now!
