MagJack 13021 pins shorted

Hi — I ordered some 13021 “RJ45 MagJack Breakout” breakout boards. I was surprised to discover that pins 1-3 are shorted together, and pins 4-6 are also shorted together. This is the case on all the units I received. A review on the product page also mentions this issue. I assume (??) this is not how it is supposed to be. I’m going to try the 00716, but just wanted to flag this in case others run into it. Thanks!

Darn! We can get you fixed up.

Were the shorts within the Jack’s pins or the underside (below) ?

Thanks for the prompt response. I tested it with a multimeter on the thru-holes labeled P1, P2, etc., but I don’t think that narrows down where the shorts were. I can check tomorrow by prying off the connector. (I couldn’t see the shorts visually, only found them after assembling a thing and having it not work, then I did sanity checks with the multimeter and found the shorts.)

There is no short, there’s a transformer inside the jack. (mag for “magnetics” in magjack) These will work great with Ethernet but don’t work at all with DC. There’s a note on the product page with suggested parts for DC (non Ethernet) use.

Note: Please keep in mind that this RJ45 MagJack Breakout is for Ethernet networks only. If all you need is a simple RJ45 breakout, we recommend soldering an RJ45 8-Pin Connector to our SparkFun RJ45 Breakout as a solution.

Ah ok, thanks. I think “recommend” is perhaps too weak of a word in that case. A strongly worded warning might be better, given that two of us have now made this mistake. I’ll try the other one.
