more surface mount soldering tools needed and source

Hi I almost fell over in my chair when I seen digikey wants 42 dollars for a syringe of solder paste. I am interested in trying to solder surface mount smd parts… sparkfun offers surface mount adapter boards and says the paste works a wile in odd conditions maby they could buy some and resell ammounts for developers willing to acsept the risk for a project.

Does anyone know of other ideas?

The boards are copper could something like tinnit and paste flux be used to attach smd’s with a hot plate or would I still need solder it only adds a .004 ammount of tin. Could I electroplate tin add paste and solder?

It seems like a experamenters kit for smd solder newbies would be fun and experamenters would love it.

post your thoughts please.

Hi,

i don’t know exactly what’s your goal and if it’s just a proto or something more serious, but i can tell you that i went on soldering various atmega in smd format and even the dreadly tc5745 camera module connector (0,5 pitch) with a thin solder tip on a self made toner-transfer pcb…!

And this even more times, it wasn’t just a lucky shot. It’s doable, no question. Clean your surfaces, apply some solder (normal 60/4, the thinnest you can find) on all tracks, then apply the component on top and just heat the pins until the solder layer melts and by capillarity gets on the pin.

yup, what he said. and don’t forget to use liquid flux.
