Need a Simple GPRS/GPS Tracking Module

Hi,

I am looking for someone who could develop a simple tracking tag that could report it’s location over GPRS every 5-10 minutes (must be configurable). I know this has been done over and over again, so rather than reinvent the wheel I figured I would throw it out there to see if anyone has a design they would be willing to sell. The main goal is to keep the cost of the device below $75 USD while extending battery life out to about 2 weeks or more if possible.

I will also be looking for a manufacturer, so if SparkFun is able to handle this, let me know.

Thanks,

Rob

lots of these on the market. Why not just shop?

Creating a new product for this is more than you’d think, in terms of warranty costs, product packaging, quality assurance, customer support, order fulfillment, etc.

The firmware must be custom to talk with our servers. It’s not something that I believe could be done with off the shelf products unless you know of some that let you customize firmware.

Thanks,

Rob

You’d have your servers accommodate the incoming data formats.

Is this limited to GPRS versus a more modern method? Beware GPRS may go EOL fairly soon.

I use generic UDP on 1XRTT and EV-DO.

Also lots of Vehicle tracking service providers: you pay monthly, such as $5/mo for certain reporting rates.

Data comes to your servers from their data center.

Also cellemetry (numerex) and Aeris use cellular control channels and have really low rates.

Thanks for the suggestions. We are setting up a conf call with the numerex guys for starters.
