Probably the Series 1 modules with firmware supporting the 802.15.4 protocol are the easiest to use.
What is your finial goal for the XBees to do?
I agree, series 1, 802.15.4 mode.
Also: decide if you need the higher power PRO version. A few dollars more, but worth it.
And what kind of antenna option you want.
