I was looking at the Olimex schematics for LPC2478 and had a doubt about the RAM chip K4S561632 (U12 and U4). Are these chips compulsorily needed for memory storage for data for the graphics LCD or just provided as an example for SDRAM storage ?

You’ll need external SDRAM for any 16 or 24-bit colour LCDs.
Even with a small 320x240x24-bit LCD you’ll need 1,843,200 bits of memory (230,400 Bytes). If you want to improve the visual appearance you’ll need double-buffering as well which means twice the memory.
