Ordered 1 Board, Received 2 ... why?

I ordered 1 PCB.

2 identical boards arrived this morning.

They look great!

I’m just wondering why I received 2 boards. They both look fine to me. Is 1 defective? What might be a reason for me to have received 2 boards?

Not that I’m complaining, I’m just curious as to why.

Most PCB manufacturers of prototype boards make two or more, in case one is defective. PCB Pool allows customers to buy them very cheaply. It looks like you were lucky and they sent you both boards.

Hey where’s my duplicate boards! I feel so cheated.

j/k

I recall hearing the answer to this a while ago. GP will send any good boards to BatchPCB and they pass them on to the customer. So if they had to redo a panel for some other board, you wind up with 2. I got 2 of each board from my last run.

The joke not withstanding, it does set up your expectations.

I’ve been on both sides of this deal. My last order gave me two copies of both designs, both absolutely perfect. My previous design I got two copies, but one of them was completely unusable (bad solder masking, etc). Makes for a nice coaster though!

Also,

I have noticed, the more complicated my design…the greater the chance I’ll get two boards back.

Well I was pretty surprised to find not two, but 6 of a board that I ordered 1 of, and 23 (!!!) of a board I ordered 3 of. For the smaller boards it sorta makes sense, they were less than 1" x 1" so maybe they just threw in a few more, but the larger boards were a bit of a surprise too. Unfortunately 3 of them had holes too small for one of the components, which was partially my fault for not leaving enough tolerance, but 3 of the boards were fine. The other problem, of course, was that this board had a flawed design that I discovered a week or two after ordering, so on with the “blue-wire” fixes!

I ordered two and just got four, and it’s a pretty simple design. Sometimes you get lucky, I guess.
