oscilloscope noob question

hi

learning how to use oscope. if I have an oscope that can handle 50v ptp can I use a 10x probe to check 110v circuits. it is a cheap battery scope so no ground isolation issues that I can see…will be using an isolation transformer on the device but still not touching anything. many years of 110v work but none with oscope.

any other issues?

thanks

A 10x probe should work, the scope would be seeing 12 volts between the probe and neutral.

DO NOT USE A SCOPE THAT’S AC POWERED, YOU CAN DESTROY THE SCOPE, THE DEVICE UNDER TEST AND POSSIBLY YOURSELF! Your scope be battery powered and not connected to anything else, anything grounded on the scope could potentially become live and that means touching the scope could cause a shock to you or worse.

An isolation transformer is recommended for the device under test for safety.

thanks
