Panel mount FTDI

Hey,

Like many of the customers here, both the electronics and project/enclosure-building is new to me.

I can see myself relatively fast dropping Arduinos, and using AVRs in sockets on protoboards. Most things seem fairly easily adaptable. For IO, I should be able to just put keystone-jacks in square holes for RJ45, there are panel mount power-sockets, 3.5mm jacks, and so on. For radio, there’s panel mount RP-SMA, and… I could go on and on.

The only thing I’m having a bit of an issue finding a comfortable way to do, is USB. It’s the easiest way to do pc/server-connectivity, and also a nice power source.

That got me thinking… What about either carrying a panel mount-friendly USB-socket, or even a USB+FTDI-socket, breaking out both TTL-level serial pins, 5V power and ground? (or simply all the pins… ).

To me (and looks like I’m not alone in this), it’s the one remaining piece to do most things comfortably.

Sounds like an idea?
