I have this older phone you created and its always worked fine with the Tmobile SIM card I had, now the micro SIM has to placed in an adapter to fit the phone and it doesn’t work?
It boots up rings once and then flashes the GM862 light slowly every second like its trying to connect to the network and then does nothing. If I click the SIM in/out I hear a tone chime in the handset when its inserted or removed.
Any idea what I can try?
If I had to guess (and this is only a guess) the cellular module in the port-o-rotary is probably old enough that it’s not compatible with the current cellular network. Current SIM cards likely also don’t support older hardware.
Do you know if I can replace the entire module with one that would work with the new cell bands? Or maybe upgrade it and at the same time have bluetooth like the newer version of the phone they came out with.
That would be possible but it’s not a simple matter of just swapping modules. It would be pretty much a complete rebuild from the ground up. Maybe someone from SparkFun can chime in? @sparky
I would be willing to pay for someone to do this and make my phone work again. Please sparkfun guys!!
The SIM7600 module (available from AliExpress) is reported to work with modern cell networks. I haven’t tried it, but have seen a few Arduino project tutorials showing how to connect it.
I looked at that part and it doesnt have all the needed connectors in order to just swap it for the existing one. Can Spark Fun techs tell me how with schematic or I will pay to have it fixed.
The schematic is under documents → Eagle files Portable Rotary Phone - Red - POR-00287 - SparkFun Electronics
