RF Link Transmitter and Receiver Antenna

I have Sparkfun’s RF Link Transmitter Receiver set in both the 434 and 315 MHz. The product page mentions using a antenna but I do not see any details.

What gauge copper wire to use?

What length for each frequency?

Straight or coiled?

and Insulated or bare?

Any help would be apreciated.

Hi BALR1415.

Just the length of the wire matters and you can leave the wire straight, or coil it to save space if needed. Just make sure that if you coil the wire and it’s bare, the turns don’t touch each other.

The formula to calculate the length of wire needed in inches is:

  • ( 234 / frequency ) * 12
  • So for a quarter wave antenna at 315MHz you need a piece of wire 8.914" long and for a quarter wave antenna at 434MHz you need a piece of wire that’s 6.470" long.
