Hello jpkelly,
Unfortunately, while the community is free to help I just want you aware that SparkFun Technical Support is unable to give full code support for anything that we, ourselves, didn’t already write and publish for our products. That being said, this is a great question for the community.
I would recommend you look at the [blog written by Dr. Rainer Hessmer. This uses Arduino C, but you can achieve a lot of the same functionality on the Raspberry Pi. You can use Python, but you can also use [wiringPi for C/C++ development.
This is a cool product and I wish you the best of luck.](http://wiringpi.com/)](Quadrature Encoder too Fast for Arduino (with Solution) – Dr Rainer Hessmer)
