I am going to be retiring soon and am looking for a hobby. I am interested in genealogy and grave cleaning. I am hoping to start locating graves for GIS purposes. Is the RTK express Kit all I need or do I also need a base unit.
Hi John (@Highlander7 ),
Welcome!
You could reach out to Doug. I’m sure he would help you get started. @doug_f
Best wishes,
Paul
If your budget will stretch that far, a pair of Facet FPL should be perfect for your application. But do reach out to Doug first. He will have some pointers for you. The Base Assisted Mode discussed in Doug’s GitHub graveyard post is only available with the newer SparkFun RTK products running RTK Everywhere. It is not available on the older RTK Firmware line - which includes the Express. Facet FPL has LoRa radio built-in so you wouldn’t need the external radio which Doug added.
I hope this helps,
Paul
Hi John (@Highlander7),
Welcome to the forum! Message me, glad to share what I’ve picked up. My wife is also a long time genealogist and expert grave cleaner :-), she’s always ready to share ideas as well. We’re in Norway at the moment, headed back to the states tomorrow. Might be a couple days before I can get back to you.
Thanks for the welcome! From your pictures in that link it looks like you have a pretty nice setup! No rush on a return message, I won’t be retiring that soon. LOL. Essentially I am looking for something entry level. I would love to get a full blown system but that is not currently in the budget. I do not need to get to millimeter accuracy, even though that would be the preferable accuracy. I watched a video that used a RTK postcard, a portable shield, a battery, and an antenna. I do not know if that would work for my needs at first and upgrade later. Some of these terms discussed in your link are familiar to me, but as a novice I need to do a lot more research and study, Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
