RV-8803

I’m a clock junkie. I’m really excited to try out the new RTC module, it looks like might challenge the DS3231 for accuracy. Plus it’s got loads of extra features that look like they may be fun to play with. A cool product to be sure!

BUT … Where’s the mounting holes? I love the 1" squares with mounting holes and Qwiic connectors, but they gotta have mounting holes! I’ve got one in my cart right now, but I’m wondering how soon will you realize this oversight and have a holed revision?

After reviewing the PCB files and asking our internal teams, we made the decision to adhere to 1"x1" with out mounting holes because the mounting holes won’t fit. We’ve recorded your feedback and our engineers will consider your suggestions as soon as possible. Your feedback makes our products better for everyone to enjoy, so we thank you.

Hi Chris,

I’m also real-time clock obsessive and have been waiting for a temperature-compensated, low-power alternative to the DS3231SN for years now.

Similar to my comment on the RV-8803 product page, I echo your sentiments that not including mounting holes was a serious oversight, though I understand the rationale behind it. The RV-8803 doesn’t have any battery switching/charging circuitry, which necessitated the use of CR1225 battery (I miss the RV-1805’s cap already). While I haven’t yet looked at the board files in Eagle, I’m wondering why SparkFun didn’t simply move the CR1225 battery holder down further on the board? It appears there is enough room to do so and there’s no real need for it to be flush with the edge of the board.

Adafruit did the same with their DS3231 breakout:

Regardless, I still ordered one and it should be arriving later today. Keen to test it against the DS3231 at cold temperatures.

Cheers,
