I was just approved to teach an IOT college class and I’d like to use the V4.1 kits.
I last taught this class in Jan 2018, using the older version Redboards. To save me tons of
hassles, could I get the answers to the following questions?
-
Is the iiC the only difference in the V4.1 kits?
-
Is the shield interface 100% the same, i.e. will I have any issues in using older shields
with v4.1 kits?
- Are there any other gotchas I need to know before ordering (10) kits? I’d like to use my own set of
experiments and shields from 2018 if possible.
Thanks guys!
Hello A0159072!
The 4.0 and 4.1 SIK’s are essentially the same. We do swap out our regular RedBoard for a RedBoard Qwiic in version 4.1 as well as include a better ultra sonic sensor as well but the experiments and everything else are pretty much unchanged.
The RedBoard Qwiic should work with any shield the regular RedBoard did as we only added a Qwiic connector to the board to make it easier to access I2C. The only issue you might run into is if you have a shield that does an analog read on pins A4 and A5. We included a logic level translator to adapt those to 3.3 volts on the Qwiic board and those will interfere with analog reads. (Most shields don’t use A4 and A5 for analog anyway) There are jumpers on the back of the board that can be cut to regain analog capability on those pins if needed but we don’t expect you would.
