simple, cheap usb module?

My son has an OLPC XO that I got through the give 1 get 1 fiasco a few years back. Its a nifty little machine, that among other things has a free GPS app that just needs a usb reciever/antenna module. I want to put something together that would let us go geocaching. I tried searching the forum for variations of "USB, “CHEAP” and “MODULE”, but every search seemed to give me the whole list.

Given that I’m a complete noob that barely knows which end of a soldering iron to hold (I did build a larson scanner kit a month back though…I know, big whoop), is there a way to build a simple module that would work, using sparkfun parts with no SMD soldering? I can supply an enclosure (ie an altoids tin with a hole cut for the antenna…), and probably muddle through a mouser catalog for misc small parts.

If you can keep it under $100, that would be great, under $50, even better.

Any help greatly appreciated.

This is a product I have been working on for a while now, off and on. We call it the GPStick. Its a simple USB based GPS with an SMA external antenna jack.

We have not set a price yet, but I expect it to be under $100, including the patch antenna and USB A to Mini B cable.

USGlobalSat, weatherproof GPS receiver+antenna, all in one. Has RS232 native, with cheap adapters for USB.

MR-350. $55.
