Sparkfun ESP8266 Wifi Shield - WRL13287 - external antenna?

Hi - on two 13287 boards, we have tried to activate the external u.Fl antenna connector by removing the 0 ohm resistor connecting the trace antenna on the board, and bridging solder (90 degree turn) across to the trace feeding the u.Fl connector. Both boards worked fine beforehand, but after connecting in this way they will show normal boot output on serial 74880 but then become immediately and permanently unresponsive on serial (either 74880 or 115200) comms through the esp8266 prog pins (using sparkfun ftdi console cable). Attempted connection via Arduino Uno (e.g. shield_demo) also reports “Error communicating with ESP8266. Looping forever.”

When the bridge is removed, and connection to the trace antenna restored, the boards work fine again, AT commands all respond as expected.

How is the external u.Fl antenna connection supposed to be activated / connected / used?

I can see the forum post viewtopic.php?f=182&t=58730&p=237563&hi … Fl#p237563 relating to the similar connection on the Sparkfun ESP8266 Thing, which suggests connecting by soldering over the bridge, but on the WRL13287 board this seems to break its serial comms.

Thanks

Please attach a clear high resolution photo showing how you have the antenna jumpered.

That should work.

You might try cleaning the flux off the board that accumulated from your soldering. At WiF frequencies that could be showing up as a short circuit.

Some 99% isopropyl alcohol and some q-tips should clean it off.
