Sparkfun Triad sensor values constantly dropping

Hello,

I have been trying to use the Sparkfun Triad to identify different materials and as I was scanning a piece of paper, I noticed the values were constantly dropping. I have enclosed the spectrometer in a black box and covered the paper with a black box as well. I have verified ambient light is not affecting the values that I get from the spectrometer. I have disabled the red power LED to avoid interference. I have attached a graph of the values over approximately a 2 minute period and also a picture of my setup. Also, when scanning a material, I get completely different results if I scan the same material a few minutes later. Can anyone tell me if my spectrometer board is malfunctioning or if I have overlooked a factor?
