Teensy 4.1 not responding, blinking 4 times, and cannot reset

I am totally new to hardware coding and stuff, this is my first time buying and using a board.

My Teensy 4.1 (with headers, no ethernet) arrived few days ago and I plug it on my PC for the time yesterday. At first, the board after plugged will have a large light blink with 1s on and 1s off, I looked at docs and say that is a default program. However, my arduino IDE cannot detect it, and my PC’s device manager also didn’t. I am assure I had properly set up the IDE following the docs in PJRC.

After I keep changing different cables, even bought a new data cable. The issue stay the same at first, and after the fourth or fifth cable test, the large light bulb no longer blinks, instead the small light blinks 4 times in a row repeating.

I searched online that is implying an error, and find some docs saying pressing the Program button for >15s to reset the board might help. I tried the method but the board has no reaction, docs said that the board should having a light keep on while reseting, but no matter how many times and how many seconds I hold pressing the button, only a 4 times in a row light is blinking.

Please tell me what else can I do in this case, or should I asked for return? Thank you so much.

Darn, they’re generally extraordinarily reliable! Try this:

  1. Unplug everything
2.Hold the Program button down BEFORE plugging in USB
  2. Keep holding while you plug in the cable
  3. Release after 2-3 seconds
  4. Check if Teensy Loader detects it (look for the red LED to go solid dim instead of blinking)

If that goes nowhere, do you perhaps have an alternate PC you can test with (preferably linux or mac, to eliminate Windows as a potential issue!)?

Thanks for the reply!

I tried your methods. I pressed the button and plugged before release. But seems the light is still blink 4 times a row without changing.

I tried another PC but still the same.

Then I connected the board to a Macbook. At the first plug, the board first having the large light blinking steady, and after few seconds, the large light keeps on and become dimmer, at the same time the small light started to blink 7 times a row (I counted it is 7 instead of 9, however I cannot find docs about blinking 7 times. I am not sure is it that I missed it). While the board still in this state, I open Arduino IDE in the macbook (set up with Teensy already) but the IDE cannot found the board, then I try to unplug and try again. After that the board will now always only blink 4 times a row and couldn’t connect, nothing more than that.

So the problem is still here. Please tell me what can I do, thanks!

Darn! Alrighty, I think it might be a DoA unit - Was it purchased from us? If so head over to Return Policy - SparkFun Electronics (contact vendor if purchased elsewhere) and we’ll get ya squared away
