trying LCD 16x2 not working ?

Hi,

I am trying one of the thing I just received from sparkfun, a basic 16x2 lcd screen :

I must first say that it’s the first time I would use this kind of thing.

And, as for now, it seems not to work, I tried by fallowing thoses pages :

and I see absolutely nothing on the screen not even a small light when I power 5v on it … how can I test this with the less outsite component ?

Thanks a lot, this did the trick, I don’t know where I made the mistake but following those guidelines (without arduino but my atmega 128) did it !!
