Turning a motor to charge a phone/Battery

Hi Folks, I am a complete newbie to electronics. Been designing products, including mice and keyboards for years but this will be my first time creating my own electronics. I am working through the tutorials for arduino so trying to educate myself.

I have project in mind and ultimately what I will be doing will be turning a motor, which I would like to charge a phone or a tablet, or even an external battery.

I’m not really sure what motor to use, so I’m looking for advice on what motor to use and also what setup to use after the motor to get me to output on a usb cable.

I have a few devices that I have taken apart with bits that I think I can use. As I said I’m working through the beginners tutorials for audrino, and have earmarked some other tutorials that might also help me out.

Any help or general pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Paddy

The amount of mechanical power required to generate a “useful” amount of electrical power takes most people by surprise, especially if it results from human effort. Measure the output power of a hand cranked flashlight to learn more.

No one can advise you about specific motors (to be used as generators) without knowing your requirements and your mechanical capabilities.
